God in the Silence: Job 38:39-39:12 Devotional
Job came expecting an explanation for his suffering. Instead, God walked him through mountains and deserts where lions were fed, mountain goats gave birth in darkness, and wild donkeys roamed free—all held in hands Job could not see. The silence, it turned out, was not empty.
There is a particular kind of silence that is hard to name. Not the silence of a crisis, when everything is loud and urgent. The quieter one. The kind that settles in after weeks, maybe months, of praying the same prayer and hearing nothing back. No sign. No clarity. No sense that anyone is listening on the other end. You lie awake composing arguments, rehearsing why an explanation would be fair, reasonable, obviously deserved. And underneath it all, a suspicion edges in: what if nothing is actually being held together? What if the world is simply running on its own, indifferent to whether you sink or swim?
The book of Job arrives at exactly this place. Job has been arguing his case into the void for chapters. When God finally answers, it is not with an explanation. It is with a walk. A tour of wild places where God turns out to have been working all along.
