The Spirit Came for the Hiding — Acts 2 Devotional
The disciples were hiding in a room. The crowd outside heard their own languages declaring God's wonders. And Peter stood to explain: this is what it looks like when God keeps old promises to ordinary people who never felt ready.
There is a particular ache that comes from standing at the edge of a room where something is clearly happening. There is laughter, there are tears, there is a kind of electricity in the air, and you find yourself wondering, quietly, whether you are the sort of person that ever happens to. It is not exactly jealousy. It is quieter than that. It is the suspicion that there is a list somewhere, written by someone who knows better than you, and your name did not make it.
That feeling has a place in Acts 2. It belongs to the people standing in the crowd who heard the wind, saw the fire, and recognized their own language coming out of a Galilean's mouth. They asked, genuinely lost, "What does this mean?" They were not mocking. They were standing at the edge of something enormous with no framework for it. And the answer they received was not a lecture. It was an invitation back into a story that was already about them.
