When Fear of God Is Actually Faith: Deuteronomy 5

The people heard God's voice from fire and darkness and knew they could not survive approaching closer. Their honest confession of this limit was not doubt. God called it good. And in that moment of admission, grace arrived.

When Fear of God Is Actually Faith: Deuteronomy 5

There is a feeling that lives in the chest more than the head. It shows up the moment before a hard conversation you know you are not ready for. It settles in the pew on a Sunday when you walked in hoping to feel close to God and somehow left feeling farther away. It is the sense that you want to draw near, and at the same time you are certain you are not enough for what nearness would require. This is not the same as doubting God is real. It is doubting that the distance between God's reality and your own can ever be crossed.

That feeling has a name in Scripture, and it belongs to a whole assembly standing at the foot of a burning mountain. Deuteronomy 5 brings us into that moment, the fire, the voice, the thick darkness, and the people's honest confession: we have heard, and we are not sure we can survive more of this. What happens next is not what fear usually expects.
