When God Shows Up All Wrong — Matthew 21 Devotional
The crowds lining Jerusalem's streets expected a warrior on a warhorse. Instead, they got a teacher on a borrowed donkey. Jesus didn't come to disappoint their hopes—He came to exceed them in ways they couldn't imagine.
When God Shows Up All Wrong
Picture the moment when you realize the person you've been waiting for has been standing right there all along, but they look nothing like what you expected. Maybe it's the job candidate who shows up in jeans instead of a suit, or the blind date who arrives on a bicycle instead of in a sports car. Your heart does this weird flip between disappointment and curiosity, is this really what I asked for?
The crowds lining Jerusalem's streets that day felt that same disorienting flip. They'd been crying out for rescue, praying for a king, begging God to finally show up. And here He was, but riding a borrowed donkey instead of a warhorse, looking more like a village teacher than a warrior. Their "Hosannas" carried all the complexity of hearts that weren't sure if this was God's answer or God's mistake.
