When God's Face Is Hidden — Ezekiel 39 Devotional

The silence after failure feels like a verdict. But Ezekiel shows us something different: a named silence is not a sealed one. God hides his face because of something, not because you are beyond reaching. And the face you have been afraid to show is the one God is already turning toward you.

When God's Face Is Hidden — Ezekiel 39 Devotional

There is a particular kind of silence that follows a failure. Not the comfortable quiet of rest, but the silence you keep testing, speaking into just to see if anything comes back. You pray and the room feels empty. You wait and nothing arrives. And slowly the silence stops feeling like quiet and starts feeling like a verdict. God has weighed things. God has stepped away. The distance between you and God feels like a distance you caused, and you are not sure it can be crossed.

Ezekiel wrote to people who knew that silence from the inside. An entire nation in exile, the temple destroyed, the glory of God visibly departed. They were not wondering abstractly whether God might withdraw. They were living in the aftermath of it. And into that silence, Ezekiel delivers a passage built around a single question: what does God do with the face he has hidden?
