When the Leader Is Gone: Deuteronomy 31 Devotional

The Empty Chair at the Front

There is a particular silence that settles into a room after the person who held everything together is gone. The mentor's office, cleared out. The grandmother's kitchen, quiet after the funeral. The chair at the head of the table where the one who always knew what to do used to sit. The absence has a shape. And underneath it runs a question that feels almost too frightening to say aloud: who holds this together now?

That is exactly the moment Deuteronomy 31 opens into. Moses is 120 years old. He will not cross the Jordan. Israel stands on the threshold of everything they have waited for, without the man who got them there. The passage does not skip over the weight of that. But it also does not stay there. Because Moses, in his final public act, does something unexpected. He stops pointing to himself and starts pointing to the One who was already moving ahead of them.
