When You Step Back and Watch Someone Else Choose Well
You were gracious. You stepped back. You said, "Whichever you want," and then you watched them choose, and they chose well. Now you stand in the leftover space wondering if you played it wrong. Abram knew that exact feeling. And then God spoke.
There is a particular sting in watching someone else take the better-looking option. Not the dramatic kind of loss, but the quiet kind. You were gracious. You stepped back. You said, "Whichever you want," and then you watched them choose, and they chose well, and now you are standing in the leftover space wondering if you played it wrong. You did the generous thing. Why does it feel like you lost?
That is almost exactly where Genesis 13 places Abram. He has just told his nephew Lot to choose first. Lot has picked the lush valley, the one that looked like Eden, and walked off toward it. And Abram is left standing in the dust of the hill country, watching the figure shrink toward the good-looking land. The text lingers in that gap, the quiet after the generous choice, before God says a word.
