When Your Heart Drifts Back to Egypt — Acts 7 Devotional

The wilderness generation is not a distant cautionary tale. They are a portrait of any heart that performs faithfulness while quietly longing for something left behind. What does your heart keep drifting back to when the cost feels too high?

When Your Heart Drifts Back to Egypt — Acts 7 Devotional

The Body Showed Up

There is a particular kind of quiet that settles over a person who knows all the right words and feels none of them. You can sit in the pew, mouth the songs, fill in every blank, and still sense that your heart is somewhere else entirely. Somewhere back behind you. Not in rebellion exactly, just elsewhere. You are not angry at God. You are not building an argument against faith. You are simply going through the motions, and you can feel the gap between what you say you believe and what is actually moving in you.

This is not a new condition. Stephen, standing before the Sanhedrin, retells Israel's story in a way that assumes exactly this kind of person is in the room. He does not say "your fathers." He says "our fathers," binding himself to the very people he is describing. The passage is not a verdict handed down from above. It is a mirror held up close.
