You Are Named Before God — John 17 Devotional
There is a particular kind of loneliness: the fear that you could slip away and no one would notice. But on the night before the cross, Jesus did not pray for the world in general. He prayed for them. For you. Not because you qualified, but because you were given.
The Quiet Ache of Being Unseen
There is a particular kind of loneliness that does not announce itself. It is not the loud grief of abandonment but the slow, quiet sense that you could slip out of a crowded room and no one would notice. The fear that you have not registered anywhere. And sometimes that fear extends upward, into the dark, where you wonder whether you have registered with God either, or whether you are simply part of the undifferentiated crowd called "the world."
On the night before the cross, in the final hours before his arrest, Jesus could have prayed about anything. Instead, he lifts his eyes to heaven and prays for specific people. People who are confused and frightened and about to be scattered. People who do not yet understand. He prays for them by name, by belonging, by the simple fact that the Father gave them to him. This is where you enter the passage. Not as a spectator, but as someone who may be numbered among the named.
