God Shows No Favoritism — Acts 10:34-43 Devotional
Peter's presence in Cornelius's home wasn't about his comfort. It was about God's expansion of grace into spaces tradition said to avoid. This week, consider the rooms—and relationships—you've sidestepped. Where is grace inviting you to show up?
Where Grace Meets Every Story
Picture Peter standing in a Roman centurion's living room, surrounded by faces that represent everything his upbringing taught him to avoid. Yet here he is, speaking words he never imagined he'd say: "God shows no favoritism." Sometimes the most radical discoveries happen when we find ourselves in rooms we never expected to enter.
This morning, take a moment to read Acts 10:34-43. Read it on Bible Gateway if you'd like.
The Room You Never Expected to Enter
Peter's presence in Cornelius's home represents a boundary-crossing that God initiated, not Peter. The Spirit had already prepared this moment through visions and divine orchestration. Peter simply had to show up and speak truth to people his tradition told him to avoid.
This week, consider the "rooms" or relationships you've avoided because they don't fit your comfort zone. Perhaps it's a conversation with someone whose lifestyle differs from yours. Maybe it's a friendship with someone from a different political perspective. Or it could be as simple as truly seeing the person who bags your groceries or delivers your mail. "In every nation the one who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him", God's impartiality might be inviting you into conversations where you can both give and receive grace in ways that surprise you.
Dropping the Performance
Cornelius was already praying, giving to the poor, and seeking God, yet he still needed to hear Peter's message of grace through Jesus. His good works didn't disqualify him, but they also didn't save him. They simply positioned his heart to receive what God freely offers.
This week, notice when you slip into performance mode with God, trying to earn what's already been offered freely. Do you catch yourself thinking you need to pray more perfectly before God will listen? Do you postpone approaching God until you've "cleaned up" some area of your life? "Everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name." Practice receiving divine love as gift rather than wage. Let your good works flow from gratitude, not from a ledger you're trying to balance.
Witnessing Without Walls
Peter proclaims that "all the prophets testify" about Jesus. The entire story of God points to this universal invitation. Notice Peter doesn't claim to have all the answers or perfect understanding, he simply shares what he's witnessed about Jesus's life, death, and resurrection.
As you move through this week, carry this same confidence, not that you have all the answers, but that God's love story is bigger than any boundary you've encountered. When opportunities arise to speak about faith, remember you're not defending a system or winning an argument. You're simply sharing what you've witnessed of God's expansive grace. Let that freedom shape how you see and speak to others.
Practices for the Week Ahead
As you step into these coming days, here are three simple ways to live out Peter's discovery:
- Morning Recognition: Each day this week, spend two minutes asking God to show you one person you typically overlook. When they come to mind, pray a simple blessing over their day.
- Grace Conversation: Initiate one genuine conversation with someone outside your usual circle. Ask about their story. Listen without agenda. Notice how God might already be at work in their life.
- Evening Release: Before bed, name one way you tried to earn God's love that day. Then physically open your hands and say, "I receive your grace as gift, not wage."
Remember, these aren't achievements to unlock God's favor. They're simply ways to align your daily life with the truth Peter discovered, that God's love knows no boundaries.
A Landing Place
God doesn't wait for us to become acceptable. The invitation has already been extended to every room, every story, every life. This week, you get to live inside that spacious grace.
If this resonated, the Daily Braids Full Braid goes deeper each morning with audio devotionals, curated practices, and rich teaching from the original languages. It's designed to be your daily companion through Scripture.
Let this truth settle deep as Sunday turns toward Monday. Then carry it forward.
Take a moment to let these words settle. If something stirred as you read, let it lead you into this prayer.
Prayer
God of no favorites, who sees every heart with perfect love,
Thank you that your grace reaches every corner of every life.
This week, give us eyes to see as you see,
past the boundaries we've inherited,
beyond the categories we've created.
Help us drop our performances and receive your gift.
Make us witnesses to your boundless welcome.
Through Christ, who is Lord of all,
Amen.
