When Faith Feels Like a Curse — 1 Kings 17 Devotional
The widow had given her last meal to the prophet. Then her son died. Standing over his body, she turned on Elijah with an accusation that echoes in our own darkest moments: didn't you come here to make things worse?
When Faith Feels Like a Curse
Picture the moment when the one person who was supposed to bring blessing into your home becomes the person you blame for everything falling apart. The widow had given her last meal to Elijah, watched God multiply her oil and flour, and then her son dies. Standing over his still body, she turns on the prophet with words that cut: "What have I to do with thee, O thou man of God? Art thou come unto me to call my sin to remembrance, and to slay my son?" 1 Kings 17:18, KJV. Her accusation voices what we've all whispered in our darkest moments, that somehow our faith has made things worse, that God's attention is more curse than blessing.
In 1 Kings 17:17-24, we witness a woman's theological world crumbling and rebuilding in the span of seven verses, teaching us that the path from doubt to faith often runs directly through the valley of honest despair.
