Why God Takes the Long Way — Exodus 13:17-22

Israel was armed and afraid at the same time—outwardly ready, inwardly fragile. God did not lecture them about their courage. God simply routed around the thing that would have exposed how unready they actually were. The detour was not a mistake. It was guidance.

Why God Takes the Long Way — Exodus 13:17-22

There is a particular kind of stillness that happens in a parked car. Engine off, hands still on the wheel, not going in yet and not driving home either. Just suspended between the thing you know you should do and the quiet pull to turn around and go back the way you came. Not because you do not want what is ahead. Because the road to get there turned out longer and stranger and harder than you planned. You thought you would be further along by now. You do not recognize the route. And underneath the tiredness sits a question you have not said out loud: did I take a wrong turn, or did God?

This is exactly where Israel stands in Exodus 13. Released at last, Pharaoh has finally let them go. And the very first thing God does is take them the long way.
